Fr DickO’Riordan will discuss some of the highlights of his recently published book, “Roots in Exile: Fifty Years as an Irish Priest in Africa”, including why he wrote the book. The book covers five decades of his life as a priest in South Africa and working with South African exiles in the diaspora and explores the contribution of the Irish diaspora to development and liberation in Southern Africa. Fr Dick will talk about how being open and listening helped him to become rooted in his new home, and will discuss the idea of exile, both as it affected him and many thousands of internally exiled South Africans. He will describe some fascinating and scary episodes with the police during apartheid, including clashes with the law, court cases and love across the ‘colour line’!
