The 500th anniversary of a Wittenberg friar’s campaign against the sale of plenary indulgences, which sparked the Protestant Reformation, is being marked all over the world. Like 1066, 1789, 1914 – and, in South Africa, 1994 – the year 1517 is an iconic date, a ‘hinge of history’.
